Brad and I were in my Miata yesterday in Phoenix on I-10. We had encountered several thunderstorm downpours on our trip from Tucson. We were west bound in I-10 in downtown Phoenix- the sun’s position was directly in our eyes and there was another down pour- the sun’s glare off of the water on the pavement and rain created a white-out condition. The road signs were completely blacked out all I could see was the shape of the sign and the visibility was near zero similar to driving in fog but the glare was very intense. In all my years of driving I have never encountered a situation like this before.
Soon after arriving at our destination another attendee arrived and informed us (with pictures he had taken with his cell phone) of a multi car pile-up in I-10 near 7th Street- which is were we had exited the freeway just twenty minutes before!

WOW!. Awful. Thank goodness you are safe....

I turned off the freeway as soon as I could and it happened to be 7th which was my intended exit. Not spending a lot time in Phoenix I don't know the area that well.

Hello..You got off just in time it seems..good..here on the coast..for an interminable amount of time..they worked to upgrade and finish the 'Eisenhower freeway system'..and subsequent extensions. One of those..the busiest highway ever and at the time..was between San Clemente and Oceanside. It was one lane N. One lane S. A lane in the middle for passing. It was nicknamed 'death alley'. Even as a young high reflex driver..I was especially careful there..One can really appreciate how important vision is..when it is taken..wowser..Peace Tony

I'm glad you and your son are ok, Zak. How scary! I was out of town this past weekend but my husband mentioned that he had been caught up in this same rain storm down in Gila Bend and actually had to pull over. It seems like when we do get storms in AZ they are so intense. Glad you are safe.
